Skip cannabis as a sleep aid

Every nightMediumGood evidence

1In 30 seconds

Do not use cannabis to fall asleep or to get back to sleep. Its main active chemical, THC, strongly cuts your REM sleep even at low doses. CBD is different, but good evidence that it improves sleep is still lacking.

3Why do it

  • 1

You protect your REM sleep, which supports mood, memory and long-term heart and brain health.

  • 2

You avoid coming to depend on a drug just to switch off at night.

  • 3

You lower your risk of next-day memory problems and, in some people, serious mental health effects.

4How to do it

  1. Do not use cannabis, whether smoked, vaped or eaten, as a way to fall asleep or return to sleep.
  2. Understand that CBD is not the same as THC. Any sleep benefit from CBD seems to come from easing anxiety, and it acts more like a sedative only at higher doses of around 160 mg or more.
  3. If you have used cannabis regularly and stop, expect vivid dreams for a few weeks. This is REM sleep catching up and should settle.
  4. Use the other protocols in this chapter for sleep, and proven stress tools for anxiety, before considering anything else.
  5. Avoid cannabis completely if you are pregnant or could be pregnant.

5Make it work in India

  • Bhang, often drunk in thandai at Holi or Shivratri, contains THC. Expect lighter, poorer sleep that night, and never drive after having it.
  • Ganja and charas are illegal under Indian narcotics law, while bhang and some CBD oils sold under Ayurveda licences sit in grey areas. Check with your doctor before trying any CBD product.
  • For a calming drink before bed, try warm haldi doodh, chamomile tea or plain warm milk instead.

Cannabis contains many active chemicals. The two best known are THC and CBD. THC causes the ’high’ and can impair thinking and coordination. CBD does not produce a high, though it still acts on the brain. When the two are combined, CBD can change how THC feels, so the balance between them matters.

THC strongly reduces REM sleep, even in small amounts. People often feel drowsy after using it, which is why some turn to it for sleep. But much like alcohol, nightly use can become a habit that is hard to break. Over time, missing REM sleep is linked with depression, heart disease and other problems. When regular users stop, many report wild, vivid dreams. That is REM rebound, the brain making up for the dream sleep it lost.

Research on cannabis and sleep has big gaps. Most studies looked at pain, PTSD or glaucoma, and only measured sleep on the side. Among teenagers, those who used edibles or vapes tended to sleep less than seven hours a night. Another study in adolescents found that THC’s drowsy effect was followed by more waking in the night and poorer memory the next day.

CBD looks more promising but is unproven. In a survey of adults with anxiety, most said they slept better on CBD, but they were reporting from memory. A careful 2024 trial gave people with insomnia 150 mg of CBD or a dummy pill. It found no difference in how fast they fell asleep or how long they slept.

THC has also been linked to psychosis in some people, which is another strong reason for caution.

Good evidence Studies consistently show THC reduces REM sleep; evidence that CBD helps sleep is thin and mixed, and one small trial at 150 mg found no benefit.

Questions people ask

Is CBD safe to try for sleep?

No serious harms of CBD are known, and it may ease worry at bedtime, but proof that it improves sleep is weak. Talk to your doctor first, especially if you take other medicines.

Why am I having intense dreams since I stopped?

That is REM rebound. Your brain is catching up on dream sleep that THC suppressed, and it usually settles over weeks to months.

7Be careful

THC can trigger psychosis in some people, particularly those with a personal or family history of mental illness. Never use cannabis during pregnancy or breastfeeding, never drive after using it, and seek help from a doctor if you find it hard to stop.
